The state is making significant moves to revitalize agriculture in Central Oahu. Multiple agencies are working together to develop a campus in Wahiawa focused on processing agricultural products, a project that is expected to provide essential infrastructure for local farmers and food-related businesses. This effort is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Hawaii's food security and promote economic growth within the agricultural sector.

The initiative, as detailed by Hawaii.gov, includes an Agriculture-Technology Park to house companies developing technology and equipment for farmers, providing agricultural land for long-term leases, and potentially offering rent credits. The project also aims to establish a centralized location to reduce transportation costs and streamline shipping processes. Existing facilities may be retrofitted to comply with food handling, preparation, and storage regulations, promoting efficiency and safety.

A key component of this plan is the implementation of a regional kitchen model. Spectrum News reports that the first kitchen will be set up in Whitmore Village, supplying meals to various schools starting in Fall 2027. This centralized kitchen model encourages the use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients and improves overall operational efficiency. This initiative aligns with the Farm to School Action Plan for Central Oahu, supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grant Program.

Furthermore, the University of Hawaii Community Design Center played a role in gathering community input and refining the logistics, infrastructure needs, and financial models for the food hub. This collaborative approach enhances the likelihood of the project's success. This project is aimed to create a campus with spaces for food processing, value-added processing, packaging, storage, cooking, and distribution, plus office and warehouse space for small businesses.
