Hawaiian Airlines has introduced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on its Osaka-Honolulu route, according to a recent announcement. Fuel deliveries beginning this month at Kansai International Airport represent the first time the airline has incorporated SAF into its operations, a move that could lower life-cycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel. This initiative underscores Hawaiian Airlines' commitment to environmental sustainability and its dedication to a greener future for air travel.

This move aligns with the broader industry trend of airlines investing in SAF to reduce their environmental impact. Hawaiian Airlines and Gevo have an agreement for the purchase of 50 million gallons of SAF over five years, starting in 2029, which will be supplied from a facility in the Midwestern United States. Hawaiian Airlines is also exploring the use of locally-produced SAF and has partnered with Par Hawaii to study the commercial viability of locally produced SAF. Hawaiian Airlines and Par Hawaii plan to explore the production of locally grown, oil-yielding crops, studying the feasibility of importing sustainable feedstocks.

However, the transition to SAF presents challenges, including higher costs compared to conventional jet fuel. A US News analysis notes that sustainable fuel can cost significantly more than its conventional counterpart. Despite these challenges, Hawaiian Airlines is actively pursuing SAF initiatives, reflecting a broader industry shift towards sustainable practices.
