Hilo's Hale Na Koa 'O Hanakahi, a 92-unit affordable housing complex, celebrated its blessing and dedication ceremony, marking the culmination of years of effort. This project, designed to provide affordable living for seniors over 62, with a preference for veterans, underscores the ongoing dedication to addressing the housing needs of Hawaii's aging population. The development’s realization, spanning across the tenures of multiple Hawaii County mayors and two state governors, is a testament to the persistent need for affordable housing and the commitment of various stakeholders.

EAH Housing partnered with the Hawai‘i Island Veterans Memorial to develop the residential component of a master-planned complex ensuring that veterans and their families have access to support and homes. The 92-unit affordable living community is available to veterans, surviving spouses and other income-qualified seniors age 62 years or older. The development, located on Kawili Street near the University of Hawaii Hilo campus, includes one-bedroom apartments thoughtfully designed across several buildings. Move-in dates were estimated to begin in September, but final construction delays have pushed the move-in date to late October or possibly even December, according to a recent report by Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

The project's impact extends beyond providing housing. It's a key example of how communities can come together to address critical social needs. It may also provide economic opportunities, such as jobs in property management, maintenance, and resident services. Such developments demonstrate the potential for similar projects across Hawaii, attracting investors and entrepreneurs committed to both social impact and financial returns in the real estate sector. The Big Island Video News has extensively covered the project.
