Maui is taking steps to tackle its waste management challenges. For the past five years, the county hasn't been composting green waste, leading to increased landfill usage. However, new developments indicate a renewed commitment to sustainable practices.

Private companies are stepping up to fill the void. Maui News reports that Hawaii Organics Compost has opened a new facility aimed at converting green waste and wooden pallets into compost. This move is designed to reduce the amount of waste sent to the Maui County landfill at Puunene. This initiative has significant implications for local businesses, potentially creating new opportunities within the green industry and supporting a more environmentally conscious business environment. The project's investors, the Sullivan brothers of PV Sullivan Inc., previously involved in the Kulahakoi Stream dredging project, exemplify the diverse business interests contributing to Maui's sustainability goals.

The Hawaii Public Radio highlights the positive impact of keeping green waste out of landfills, citing Hawaii Organics Compost's efforts to transform it into a usable resource. This demonstrates a shift towards circular economy principles, where waste is viewed as a valuable input.

This is not the first time composting operations have been considered for Maui. A 2020 review of composting operations in Maui County details previous efforts and mentions the County's previous practices of composting and the use of green waste. These steps towards composting have the potential to create local jobs, reduce environmental impact, and align Maui with broader sustainability goals.

The renewed focus on composting in Maui reflects a growing trend toward sustainable waste management practices, potentially opening up new avenues for entrepreneurs and investors in the green sector. By diverting green waste, the county aims to extend the life of its landfills while producing valuable compost for local use.
